All about window blinds

Window blinds transform the look of a place. They are an alternative to traditional curtains and drapes. Perfectly chosen window blinds complement the house and add style to it. Blinds offer an excellent way to control the light and temperature of a room. They are opened to let the light in and closed for privacy and blocking the light. There are many types of blinds like horizontal blinds, vertical blinds, roman blinds, etc. Though horizontal blinds are the most commonly used, the vertical ones continue to remain in style because they are incredibly versatile.

Types of blinds

Horizontal blinds

Horizontal blinds or Venetian blinds and have horizontal slats hanging from a headrail by a cord. There are two cords in its mechanism, one to raise and the other to tilt the slats. The tilt-cord lets light in, and the raise-cord lifts the slats to any level. They are available in different slat widths, and the broader slats block out more light. These slats can block out 95% of the daylight, but they don’t provide total darkness. It isn’t easy to clean as each slat has to be wiped down individually.

Roller blinds

The Roller blind has a single panel of fabric that rolls out from a bar on the top. They have a weighted bottom bar to ensure the blind doesn’t blow around when it is closed. The blinds are made of blackout fabric, light-filtering voile fabric, and two-layer day and night fabrics. The fabric for the blinds is available in different colours and whimsical prints. The day and night roller blinds have two layers of fabric and allow more control over the amount of light penetration, and they are similar to horizontal blinds.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds are luxurious window coverings made from decorative fabrics. They have horizontal stiffener rods sewn into the back in different places. When opened, the stiffener rods allow the blinds to fold neatly towards the top of the window. When closed, the blinds lay flat like a single piece of fabric. These blinds are available in various materials, beautiful colours, and designer prints. They are customisable but don’t offer much light control.

Perfect fit blinds

Perfect fit blinds are attached directly to the window and not to the window frame. Even when the window is opened or closed, they remain flat against the glass. They are a perfect choice for windows that tilt open and are available as pleated or cellular shades. The pleats fold up when the blinds are raised and expand when lowered. The most significant advantage is they will not bang about while opening or closing the doors and will not dangle from the window while it is tilted to open.

Vertical blinds

The blinds are made with vertical vanes linked together at the bottom. They open to the right or left, and the vanes can be angled to direct the light around the room. The blinds are available in a variety of colours to match any decor. They are the best for large windows with a width of up to 400 centimetres. They make the ceiling look higher, especially on floor-to-ceiling windows and patio doors. The slats block sunlight more effectively and provide UV protection. They give ultimate privacy when closed completely.

The blinds are made with blackout fabric to cut out light or dim-out fabric to allow light into the room. If a single panel is damaged, it can easily be replaced, and the blinds can be cleaned without much hassle.

There are many window blinds, and customers can choose a blind according to their requirements. Blinds have become a preferred option for covering the windows. With a wide range of colours, fabrics, and designs available, they are suitable for all types of homes, apartments, and offices.
